My co-worker, Mr. Confiscation, took my cell phone away from me and refused to give it back until I got my work done.
What’s happening? A few months ago, I never picked up my cell phone. I kept it on silent and frequently forgot to take it out with me. My co-workers learned quickly that I was not reachable via cell phone and I was fine with that. Unlike everyone else, “unreachable” was still an adjective that could describe me.
Then came the day when a certain someone asked for my number. His first text message brought about an instant relationship - a hardcore one between me and my cell phone.
At my desk, it’s on display. During a meeting, it’s hidden on vibrate. I constantly check for missed calls. I pray for a text to shatter the silence. When there is hasn’t been cellular activity for set duration of time (typically three hours), I dial myself from the closest landline to make sure it didn’t break somehow in its stationary state. When someone takes a step in a fifty-mile radius causing an atom to move, I instantly think it’s a vibration and grab my phone. I tried a return to silencing but then I just stare at the screen and demand it to glow.
On top of everything, my co-workers have witnessed this entire transformation and so now I lost my favorite ability to be “unreachable.”
Any suggestions or should I call on someone else?
